Sometimes when I'm not sure what I want to read for the rest of the month, I just pick up a series. I love interconnected standalones, as well as complete series with 3-4 books. They're also great for meeting my yearly reading goal sometimes!
To be honest, I try to avoid series with over 4 books, unless it's an incomplete series with 3-4 books already out. If you're anything like me, here are X book series with less than 5 books. These include trilogies, duologies, and a couple of incomplete interconnected standalones.
Book series that I’ve already mentioned
In my previous book recommendations post, I already talked about a handful of series so you can go there if you want the review but here’s a quick recap of the titles:
Sands of Arwaiya, Hafsah Faizal
The Marghazar Trials, Aamna Qureshi
The Wrath & The Dawn, Renee Ahdieh
Lovelight Series, BK Borison
Windy City Series, Liz Tomforde
Book series that I haven’t mentioned
1. The Kiss Quotient Trilogy, Helen Hoang
In my opinion, The Kiss Quotient trilogy is an underrated gem in the contemporary romance community. It's another series that I want to reread super soon. The first book's the perfect balance of light-hearted and steamy, and I remember falling in love with Michael. He's so dreamy and perfect, and I'm a little sad that he's not real.
I also wanna add that you should pick up the next two books, The Bride Test and The Heart Principle. I enjoyed all three books, and to this day, I wish Helen Hoang wrote more books.
2. The Ember Quartet, Sabaa Tahir
If you like fantasy reads, I have a slight feeling that you'll like the Ember Quartet by Sabaa Tahir. It follows the story of Laia and Elias as they fight for freedom from their lives in a brutal world. An Ember in the Ashes was highly recommended by one of my reader friends and as it turns out, it ended up being one of my top reads of 2022.
Even when it caused me pain, I enjoyed the series a lot. Sabaa Tahir's writing was compelling, and the plot was riveting. You should add An Ember in the Ashes to your TBR.
3. Dark Verse, Runyx
**Check Trigger Warnings before starting**
As an avid fan of the romance genre, I've had my fair share of dark romances. But I've only dipped my toe into the genre so far.
Regardless, the hype around the Dark Verse Series is well-deserved. It's a dark contemporary mafia romance, and honestly, nothing compares to this incredible book series. I fell in love with Runyx's writing style, especially with her talent in writing scenes with a lot of tension.
Another aspect I love about the Dark Verse series is the plot and the characters. All of the books are so well-planned out and as you progress further into the series, it genuinely feels like a puzzle piece being solved. The plot constantly unravels, and you can see how the main characters carry their stories.
4. Salacious Players Club Series, Sara Cate
If you’re in the mood for something that’s a little bit shameless and extremely hot, maybe you can take a chance on the Salacious Players Club Series by Sara Cate. It’s a contemporary **adult** romance erotica series of interconnected standalones that I secretly enjoyed (up until this post haha).
To sum it up, it’s about four owners of a sex club and their kinks. The books are a quick read, very spicy, and wild all-around. It’s my first time reading a series about kinks and honestly, I’m still looking for a series just like this because it had men begging.
To be honest, I thought if this series stuck to the original 4 books, it would’ve been amazing. I personally loved Books 1 to 4 (Praise, Eyes On Me, Give Me More, and Mercy) but I didn’t like Highest Bidder (Book 5) and I DNF’ed Madame (Book 6). However, if you’re still interested in picking up the last book, go ahead! ;)
5. The Legendborn Cycle, Tracy Deonn
But if you’re in the mood for a great fantasy series, I wanna recommend the Legendborn Cycle. It’s a contemporary fantasy series that’s a modern-day twist on Arthurian legend. As a fantasy reader, I thought the premise of this book was refreshing compared to all the usual fantasy books that were set in a magical world with kingdoms, dragons, and ballroom dances.
The first book, Legendborn, was hard to get into at first, but when I picked it back up after getting my Kindle, I finished it in two days. I wondered why I didn’t pick it back up sooner because it was a really good book. The world-building and the magic system were interesting and the twists kept me on my toes. Bree was also super badass, and I loved reading how she learned how to harness her powers in Bloodmarked.
Book 3 — Oathbound — is coming next year so fingers crossed it all ends well ;)
